Worried you might have Strep Throat?

 

The rapid strep test (RST) is a rapid antigen detection test (RADT) that is widely used in clinics to assist in the diagnosis of bacterial pharyngitis caused by group A streptococci (GAS), sometimes termed strep throat.

​

Rapid strep test. Results from a rapid strep test are available within 10 to 15 minutes. Results from a throat culture may take 1 to 2 days.

​

Signs and symptoms of strep throat can include:

• Throat pain that usually comes on quickly

• Painful swallowing

• Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus

• Tiny red spots on the area at the back of the roof of the mouth (soft or hard palate)

• Swollen, tender lymph nodes in your neck

• Fever

• Headache

• Rash

• Nausea or vomiting, especially in younger children

• Body aches

 

Suspicious of a UTI?

 

Testing for a (UTI) urinary tract infections includes analyzing a urine sample to look for white blood cells, red blood cells or bacteria. Sometimes these tests are also sent off-site to be cultured.

Urinary analysis results can take up to 10 minutes. Result from a culture can take 1-2 days.

To identify a UTI, keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

• A burning feeling when you urinate

• A frequent or intense urge to urinate, even though little comes out when you do

• Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen

• Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling urine

• Feeling tired or shaky

• Fever or chills (a sign the infection may have reached your kidneys)

 

Pregnancy?

 

There are two ways to test for pregnancy. One tests the blood for the pregnancy hormone, hCG. The other checks the urine for the hCG hormone. We perform urine pregnancy tests (UPT) in our office as the first step in diagnosing a pregnancy. If the urine test is positive a blood test can be ordered.
